Journal Week 12

People involved: 1 st Girl: Black hair light blue eyes Green NDSU scrubs  Big smile  2 nd Girl: Blonde hair  NDSU gold sweatshirt  Where: Starbucks 52 nd Ave.  Large tables in the middle of the room The story: Two girls were sitting at a table inside of Starbucks off of 52 nd Avenue. They were studying and seemed to be biology majors considering the majority of their textbooks were science based. I overheard their conversation about their Christianity. It seemed as though the girl in scrubs was preaching her advice from her own experiences to the girl in the NDSU sweatshirt. The girl in the scrubs was consoling the other girl for maybe drifting away from her Christianity. They talked about how it was okay she lost herself for a moment, but now she needs to put more of an effort into going to her bible study group. This then led to a different conversation consisting of the girl in scrubs showing concern and giving advice towards ...

Week 11 Newswriting

Finding My Voice Finding my own distinct writing voice has always been difficult for me. In my life outside of writing, I have often found myself conforming in some way to the environment and people around me. As I get older and experience different things in my life, I am slowly evolving into my own individual person and hopefully with work my writing will do the same. My writing voice that is most frequently used is very formal and boring in my opinion. I often think that my writing is very to the point, and I have a hard time elaborating. This is due to the fact that I really never write for fun or expression. I am always writing for school purposes. I feel that I have no opportunity to make the majority of my writing assignments creative or original to me. Even with creative assignments, there is always guidelines and rubrics to follow. In my head, there is a voice that must be used for school which is very professional and to the point, and if I were to go outside those guide...

Week 11 Journal

I believe my beat would be in the beauty category. Specifically reviewing makeup and other beauty products. I chose this beat because I am a certified makeup artist, and am always looking for the best products. I would like to say that my opinion on these products would be trusted and useful.  Contacts: 1.      Justine Dunton-Rose: Global Director PR, Events, and Influencer Relations Becca Inc.  New York, New York  PR@beccacosmetics.com 2.      Stephanie Thomas Public Relations at Smashbox Cosmetics Toronto, Canada 8549 Higuera St Culver City, CA 90232 (310) 579 6000 3.      Maram Aoudi Senior Social Media Manager: Influencer Relations at Too Faced Cosmetics 18231 McDurmott WestSuite 100 Irvine CA 92614  4.      Denise Kreft Senior PR Manager NARS Cosmetics  900 Third Avenue  17th floor New York, NY 10022  5.      Rena Gillen Direct...

Week 10 Newswriting

Shattered Glass: The Definition of Fake News Before being assigned to watch the film “Shattered Glass”, I had never heard of the infamous Stephen Glass. This seems a bit surprising reflecting on how much “fake news” seems to be circulating the media. I am a bit embarrassed that I had never heard of the man who some might say invented fake news before it was called just that. In case you also have no knowledge of this man or need a refresher: here is a bit of background information. The film begins with Stephen Glass, a growing journalist, at the beginning of the peak of his career. Throughout the movie, you see his writing and popularity among his coworkers and readers expand. Different great stories go by, and Glass’ contacts with huge magazines grow. All of his coworkers strive to write like he does. That is until Penenberg, editor of the online publication of Forbes, finds gaps in his story, Hack Heaven, that just do not add up.  With exhausting interrogation done by exec...

Newswriting Week 8

Farmer Using Cannon to Protect Watermelons Farmer comes to last resort as he uses a cannon to protect his crop.             Hayden Conroy, 52, of Blainville was seen fighting off the famous Watermelon Bandits with his homemade cannon at about 7 p.m. Wednesday. The event occurred on Conroy’s farm at 10327 28 th St.              Although this act seems unreasonable, Conroy and other farmers have been fighting off these Watermelon Bandits for quite some time now. Many have tried other tactics such as fences, poison, and traps. Fed up with his failed attempts to hold back the bandits, Conroy decided to protect his crops with something more extreme and effective.              Conroy set up his canon just west of his watermelon patch the bandits had been going after. Neighbors say they heard the...
