“Money is the root of all evil” depicts money itself as being evil. However, the correct quote is “The love of money is the root of all evil”. This takes on a whole different meaning. It means loving money too much will lead to bad things, not money in general. According to Virily, the original quote suggests that people who are too eager for money or love money too much are in the wrong. The misquoted version suggests that being in possession of money will lead to bad things. This quote comes from the Bible where many other quotes get taken out of context.
The quote “That’s one small step for man, giant leap for mankind” is a very famous quote said by Neil Armstrong that almost everybody knows. Although, many agree that it does not really make sense because man and mankind are synonyms. However, this quote is incorrect. The real quote is “That’s one small step for a man, giant leap for mankind”. According to Space, the word “a” was not heard in the moonwalk transmission. When Armstrong says “a man” he is referring to himself, not all of man. He is explaining that his step is a giant leap for mankind.
“Nice guys finish last” is a quote explaining that nice guys often get the short end of the stick. It is often times used when referencing a woman who is only interested in bad guys or jerks. However, the actual quote is from a baseball manager Leo Durocher. According to All That is Interesting,Durocher was referring to a rival team. He really said, “Take a look at them. They’re all nice guys, but they’ll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.”. Durocher was saying that the players on the rival team are nice guys, but they are going to lose.
“Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing” implies that winning is the only option. It emphasizes the importance of winning and the consequences of losing. However, according to Wikiquote, the real quote is “Winning isn’t a sometime thing; it’s an all time thing”. The real quote refers to the occurrence of winning, not the importance of it. One could also argue that the false quote suggests the importance of winning at one certain moment. The real quote could be implying winning on multiple occasions. The quote was spoken by a former UCLA football coach Henry Russel.
The quote “Good things come to those who wait” suggests that patience will lead to good things. If you wait and be patient you will get what you want. However, according to Wikiquote, this quote was cut short. The full quote is “Good things come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle”. This takes on a completely different meaning. The full quote implies that if you wait for something, the ones who have got up and worked hard will have what you want. The beginning of the quote says to wait for what you want, but when you add the rest, it tells you to do the complete opposite.
