Newswriting Assignment 3

The article “Recreational Marijuana: A Business Boon For States?” argues that the legalization of recreational marijuana would be beneficial. This article argues that there would be a large amount of tax revenue and lower crime rate. It also states that there would be a strict policy. However, these arguments do have fault. The article argues that taxes made off of recreational marijuana could be put back into programs for public schools. Although money is always helpful, one may find it unsettling knowing the where this revenue is coming from. It is ironic that revenue coming from marijuana going to schools when it is such a danger to those in those schools. Allowing recreational marijuana to be legal will create easier access for underage kids. Marijuana is evolving into a more dangerous drug with serious side effects such as various mental health issues. In addition, the cost of impaired driving will raise. Tax revenues does not seem like an ethical reason to create a danger....

Week 3 Journal

1)     To what extent do we learn these ideas of right & wrong from our environment?    To what extent is this morality intrinsic, i.e., present in us from birth? I feel that we learn ideas of right and wrong from our environment mostly through consequences. When being raised in a certain environment, we learn what is acceptable and unacceptable. We are punished or looked down upon for acting in a way that was not morally correct. Therefore, I believe a large majority of our morals comes from whomever raised us. Also, as we get older and learn how the world is without guidance, society controls our morals as well. We learn what society looks down upon and what consequences come with that act. For example, one may want to steal a clothing piece because they do not want to pay for it. One may think of the consequence of breaking the law and going to jail. One may also feel bad for stealing from the store owner. I believe that our morals are slightly intrins...

Week 2 Journal

My first online journalist in an interest of mine is Tati Westbrook. Tati is a Youtube personality whose channel revolves around reviews. She is known for being brutally honest with her reviews, and creating a trustworthy relationship with her subscribers by doing so. She has grown her channel to 5.2 million subscribers beginning her channel in 2010. She now owns her own skincare line named Halo.  The next two online journalists I chose are very similar to each other. Desi Perkins and Jaclyn Hill are makeup artists both having Youtube channels. Desi has 3.2 million subscribers, and Jaclyn has 5.7 million subscribers. They have both had very successful collaborations with popular beauty companies, and filmed with Kim Kardashian. Amanda Stanton and Lauren Garcia are two online bloggers that I like to follow. Amanda’s blog revolves around fashion and the latest trends. Lauren’s blog, What Lola Likes, is based on lifestyle and fashion. It includes subjects such as skincare, recipe...

Newswriting Assignment 2

Tati Westbrook is a Youtube personality whose channel revolves around reviewing beauty products. I have been a longtime follower of Tati, and have enjoyed watching her success I know she deserved from the beginning. I gravitate towards her because of her genuine and honest reviews That is why I chose her to write about out of all other beauty channels on Youtube. Others should follow Tati because she is a reliable reporter. She is honest if a product does not work for her, and she gives specific reasons why she did not like it. She gives each product a fair chance. She goes into the review with an open mind. She does not take paid partnerships with beauty brands. She believes this will interfere with the trust her subscribers have with her. One attribute I like about her reporting is she tells the truth, but remains respectful. She is very direct, but she does not tear down a brand if they make a bad product. One thing I would change about her reporting, would be her unnecessary apolo...

Class Assignment 1

I believe that there are many different elements that could lead to one’s bias. One of those being the way they were raised. The way parents feel about certain topics influences a child’s opinions on these topics. If a whole family has strong opinions and voices them, it will be more difficult for the child to voice opposing opinions. I feel as though children often grow up believing their parents know everything, and have the answer to everything. This may lead to one not hearing or believing other arguments on an issue. Furthermore, I believe that your peers and where you live have a large influence on your bias. Often times there is a majority feeling about certain issues in a specific area. I believe it would be difficult to hear other sides of an argument if you live in an area with a heavy majority opinion.  My biases came from my family. I grew up with very opinionated family members, and, being younger, it was often times difficult to disagree with them. However, as I’ve...

Newswriting Assignment 1

My name is Olivia Strickler. I am a second-year student at NDSU. I grew up in a small town called Warren, Minnesota. I decided to come to NDSU as a very last-minute decision. My older brother was currently attending, and my family has always been huge Bison fans traveling down for all of the games. NDSU seemed like a comfortable decision with having my brother for guidance. I enjoyed the “mid-west nice” feel of the campus. It is close enough to home, but far away enough to feel independent. I am taking Comm 200 for my major: Strategic Communication. I believe this class will benefit myself by encouraging me to write more often and effectively. I believe this course will help me further understand media style writing. I believe this class will especially benefit me in my future career by giving me the knowledge of another style of writing. I am not exactly sure what I would like to do after college. I am looking into PR work possibly for a non-profit organization. I have also consideri...
